The Bible states that Mary was a virgin when she became the mother of Jesus. Is that really possible? Is a virgin birth possible?
A virgin birth is impossible in humans
According to the Bible, Mary was a virgin when she received Jesus, although virgin births do not occur in humans and other mammals. It is a normal phenomenon with invertebrates, and also occurs with fish, amphibians and reptiles.
In nature, a virgin birth parthenogenesis called. It is a smart method of reproduction in which unfertilized eggs develop into a fetus without seeds. The disadvantage is that the offspring is an exact copy of the mother, and that is at the expense of genetic variation and the ability to adapt.
Three animals chose virgin births
These three animals have demonstrably reproduced without sex:
? KOMODOVARAAN: In rare cases, Komodo dragon can multiply without sex. In 2006, females successfully hatched unfertilized eggs in two British zoos.
? HAMMER SHARK: In 2001, a hammerhead shark gave birth to a juvenile without the need for a male. This is the first case recorded with sharks.
? WURGSLANG: In 2010, researchers in the US discovered that a lonely female boa in captivity had thrown two litters. DNA analyzes confirmed that the youngsters from both litters were fatherless.
Virgin birth is not the only option
Animals do everything they can to ensure reproduction - for example, change gender or mating with deception. Read more about it in this article:
